The Duchy has the capacity to be an every day medieval setting, in which a group of odd friends go adventuring. Dungeoneering, murder, fairy kingdoms etc. But, the way I think I will attack it will be from an outside perspective. Who would come to the Duchy? In history, the baltic lands were largely encased by thick forest and swamps that acted as a natural defense. It's rivers were also not navigable to any meaningful trade opportunities. Most of the vikings went around. But, when they first arrived, they weren't to know that. The lands were a curiosity. What kinds of people and places sat behind the shore lines.
So historically, there were many explorers. The Golden Horde came in from the south east. Some of them stayed around and became body guards of the high duke. The Teutonic knights came in from the north to spread the good word and... loot. The vikings came from the west, but also baltic vikings went west and then came back. The Prussians and other baltic tribes came in from the south and then of course there were internal criminals and outcasts who spent some time away or in hiding before returning to explore and build a life elsewhere.
So, we shall look at
Horse lords, that have been split from their tribe and come to the land with many hopes and dreams.
Monotheist knights come to spread the word and enslave.
Sailors who come to trade, settle, raid.
And outside tribes who come to take land, wealth and power. From the north, the west and the south.
Criminals. The original beginnings of the duchy were released criminals with tattoos given a chance to regain their lives.
Over the next week I will explore each. This is a work in progress
